Tottenham are hoping to sign Axel Witsel in January.
Spurs are hoping to sign Axel Witsel in the January transfer window, and a report in Italian media outlet Calciomercato claims that the North London club are leading the race for the Belgian midfielder’s signature.
It its a surprise to see Spurs tracking Witsel, considering the impressive form of Eric Dier and Dele Alli in midfield. It is hard to imagine Witsel becoming an immediate first choice, but the 26-year-old would not want to be restricted to a back-up role considering how much football he has played for Zenit St Petersburg, and his importance to the Belgian national team.
However, the report claims that Spurs are in pole position to sign the midfielder, with Witsel making it clear that he has no intentions of extending his current contract past the end of the 2016/17 season when it expires.
Zenit are aware that his value is rapidly decreasing with no future deal in the pipeline, and although they know he must be sold, the report claims that nothing less than a bid of £17.5 million will be enough to prise him away from Russia. Zenit will also not deal with a loan either, and want the money paid over a short period of time.
Witsel himself is also looking for the move away from Russia, and he is certainly open to switch to Spurs if they can agree a deal with Zenit.
However, AC Milan are also named in the report as a club keen on Witsel, having tried to sign him over the summer, and the report claims that the Italian giants believe Witsel would prefer a move to the San Siro ahead of anywhere else.
Regardless, talks have reportedly already started between Witsel and a number of interested clubs, and right now, the report states that Spurs are in pole position to sign the talented midfielder in January.
