Collymore believes there are three leaders in the Liverpool playing squad.
The former Reds striker said: “The biggest attribute you need is leadership. For Liverpool, they have [Martin] Skrtel, [Dejan] Lovren and James Milner to lean on. They have to have voices, and players who can push them into position now and again.”
Milner and Skrtel are the obvious leader figures in the current squad, especially whilst Jordan Henderson is out of action through injury.
Milner has been captaining the side in Henderson’s absence, and Skrtel has been a long-term key figure at Anfield, but it is a surprise to see Collymore named Lovren as one of the leaders in the squad.
Lovren has been something of a comedy figure since swapping Southampton for Liverpool last summer, failing to ever establish himself in the first-team after a series of poor performances.
However, he is now playing consistently due to Mamadou Sakho’s injury, and Collymore believes he is showing the type of form that makes him a leader in the squad.
He is vocal, passionate and - for now - a reliable figure in the backline, which means his teammates can lean upon him for support if needed.
Lovren has come under deserved criticism since his transfer to Liverpool, but the injury to Sakho at centre-back looks to have been the catalyst for the Croatian defender to finally establish himself as a key figure at Anfield.
