The Argentine’s goal in City’s 4-1 loss at the hands of Liverpool was a significant one for the Premier League history books.
The Blues may have suffered humiliation in their 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Liverpool but it was still a day and date to remember for the Argentine.
Back in the City team following his recent injury layoff, Aguero got on the scoresheet for the Citizens just before half-time.
His goal may not have led to the comeback some had hoped for – City were 3-1 down after he netted – but it was nevertheless an historic strike for a player who has brought so much to the English top-flight.
That’s because, in scoring against Liverpool, Aguero became the outright highest scoring South American to ever grace the Premier League.
85 - Sergio Aguero is now the top-scoring South American player in Premier League history (85 goals). Gaucho.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) November 21, 2015
With an overall tally of 85 goals in the Premier League to date, all of which have come with Manchester City, Aguero has now overtaken Carlos Tevez as the highest scoring South American star.
Tevez netted an impressive 84 Premier League goals during spells with West Ham, Manchester United and Manchester City but his compatriot has now gone one better.
More impressive still, Aguero has scored all of his goals with just one club.
The Argentine pair, meanwhile, are some way ahead of the chasing pack, with Luis Suarez next in the record books on 69.
Fellow Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet who has 54 Premier League goals follows him, while Pervuvian cult hero Nolberto Solano completes the top five with 49.
So while City will be licking their wounds following a heavy loss against the Reds, it’s good news at least for Aguero.
