Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel had one of his most dominating games of the season as his side recorded an astonishing 4-1 victory at Premier League title favourites Manchester City.
The Reds were in fiery mood from the off and didn’t allow City a moments peace in possession, pressing high up the pitch and forcing the hosts in to a number of mistakes.
While Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino were in sizzling for upfront, City still posed plenty of attacking dangers themselves, but they struggled to make headway with Liverpool solid at the back.
Skrtel led by example, and his goal 10 minutes from time was simply the icing on the cake to what was a superb performance from the Slovakia international.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the experienced centre-back contributed in a number of key areas as helped keep Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne at bay.
Skrtel made two tackles, five interceptions, three defensive duel winners, three ball recoveries and eight effective clearances as Liverpool’s back four for the most part stood up to the task.
As City ramped up the pressure late on, Skrtel ended the game as a contest as he fired in an unstoppable strike which prompted wild scenes among the delighted travelling support.
While that goal may live long in the memory, the 30-year-old’s performance is better described by the photo below which highlights how he got the better of Sergio Aguero on his return from injury.
