Former Arsenal star Paul Merson explained on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (November 21) how West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet is similar to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
Merson believes that when Payet has the ball, his West Ham teammates make the types of runs that Fernando Torres used to make when he played with Gerrard at Liverpool.
“We saw it many years ago with Torres and Gerrard,” said Merson. “Torres made runs when Steven Gerrard was on the ball. He did not make too many runs when anyone else was on the ball.
“And that’s what Payet brings to the table with West Ham - people willing to make runs forward knowing that they are going to get the ball.”
Payet suffered a serious knee injury during the Premier League game against Everton earlier this month and has been ruled out for three months.
The France international joined West Ham from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille in the summer transfer window and has taken the Premier League by storm.
The 28-year-old has scored five goals and created 46 chances in 12 league appearances so far this season.
Payet has a pass accuracy of 82% and a shot accuracy of 65%, and has won one header, 28 dribbles and seven tackles.
