Ray Parlour gives his verdict on Arsenal’s defeat to West Brom

West Bromwich Albion defeated Arsenal 2-1 on Saturday.

Ray Parlour wrote on Twitter that Arsenal had a bad day at the office on Saturday as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion and suffered two injuries in the process.

The Gunners headed into the clash with a number of injuries and the last thing they would have wanted was for Francis Coquelin to pick up a knee problem 15 minutes into the contest.

Despite Olivier Giroud giving the visitors the lead after 28 minutes, it already had the feeling of one of those afternoons for Arsene Wenger, and West Brom soon turned the game on its head.

A James Morrison strike and a Mikel Arteta own goal within five minutes of each other gave the Baggies the lead, and then matters got worse after the restart when Arteta also picked up an injury.

Luck was not on Arsenal’s side and when Santi Cazorla slipped and subsequently sent his penalty over the bar, the writing was on the wall and former Arsenal star Parlour later summarised it well.

If there is a positive to take from yesterday, it’s that Arsenal didn’t lose any ground on fellow Premier League title contenders Manchester City as they crashed to a 4-1 home defeat to Liverpool.

The gap between the North London outfit and surprise new leaders Leicester City is just two points, therefore there is no need to hit any panic buttons just yet.

However, Coquelin’s injury does pose a potential problem for Wenger depending on its seriousness and with January not too far away, perhaps this was the warning sign which was ultimately needed.

Arsenal need to make at least one more outfield addition in the upcoming transfer window.
