They weren't the only ones, of course, but the former Reds stars had plenty to say on Twitter after the game.
Aldridge took to social media by suggesting Liverpool had made a big statement by thrashing City, especially as they had several players out injured.
What a statement!!!!fantastic performance!City without a few players but so have we!!it's a great win.— John Aldridge (@Realaldo474) November 21, 2015
Meanwhile, Thompson joked about Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, who moved to the Etihad Stadium after leaving Liverpool over the summer.
Indeed, Thompson picked James Milner over Kevin De Bruyne in his Manchester City - Liverpool combined XI heading into the game. And he defended that choice after the 4-1 win, joking that he was wrong to have picked Sterling, Yaya Toure and Fernando.
Rush's tweet was simpler: a mere celebration of a not so mere victory.
I was right about De Bruyne but wrong about Sterling, Toure, Fernando. Should have omitted them as well! Up the Reds!!— Phil Thompson (@Phil_Thompson4) November 21, 2015
Next up for Liverpool is a Europa League clash against Bordeaux, before the Reds face Swansea City in the Premier League. Manchester City, meanwhile, face a tough trip to Juventus in the Champions League before hosting Southampton next weekend.
