Paul Merson claims Tottenham are in big trouble if Andy Carroll starts for West Ham United

Tottenham Hotspur are due to meet West Ham United at White Hart Lane later this afternoon.

Paul Merson has told Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, which was broadcast on 21 November, that Tottenham Hotspur could be in trouble if West Ham United play Andy Carroll this afternoon.

The Hammers are set to travel to White Hart Lane later, and Merson feels that Slaven Bilic should select the target man.

The former Arsenal midfielder claims that Spurs struggled to deal with balls into the box in the latter stages of the North London Derby, and he feels West Ham should learn from that contest.

“The worrying thing for Tottenham is if Andy Carroll plays,” Merson said.

“Because when it went 1-1 [against Arsenal] and the ball started going in the box, they were all over the place.

“If West Ham can get into areas and get the ball into the box, Tottenham are in big trouble.”

Whether Carroll will start against Spurs remains unknown, but Bilic is a fan of the England international.

The Croatian boss has been keen to use Carroll sparingly so far, but the powerful forward has begun to come back into contention recently.

Carroll scored for West Ham against Chelsea, and he has been selected to start in the London outfit’s two matches since – against Watford and Everton.

The 26-year-old failed to hit the back of the net in either of those two contests, but he will be keen to prove Merson correct by getting on the scoresheet against Spurs today.
