Manchester City’s Fernandinho vs Liverpool’s Milner who’s been better this season?

City host Liverpool this weekend with Jurgen Klopp's side keen to return to winning ways.

This weekend brings a heavyweight clash, as Manchester City take on Liverpool at the Etihad.

Much of the focus before the game has been on Raheem Sterling, with him set to take on his former side for the first time since leaving in the summer.

Another player who will be taking on his old side is James Milner, who made the move to Anfield as a free agent as he sought extended game time in a central midfield position.

One man who stopped him doing that at City was Brazilian Fernandinho, who has continued in that role this season.

But who has been better so far? We decided to take a look at the stats to find out.

SeasonTotal Pass per GameAccurate Pass per GameUnsuccessful Touch per GameWon Tackle per GameInterception Won per GameOutfielder Block per Game
Fernandinho 2015-2016 65.6 58.9 0.4 2.5 1.7 0.08
James Milner 2015-2016 48 38.4 1.7 1.6 0.5 0.09

And it’s a clear win for the Manchester City star, who came out on top in all eight areas we looked at.

He has managed more passes per game, as well as more accurate passes per game so far this season.

Similarly, he has enjoyed fewer unsuccessful touches per game than Milner so far.

Even the defensive side of his game has been superior, as he has won more tackles per game and more interceptions than his fellow midfielder.

A clear win for Fernandinho, then, who will hope to enjoy similar success when the two sides clash at the weekend.
