Jamie Carragher has told The London Evening Standard that Liverpool may need to sign a central defender in the January transfer window.
While discussing the injury suffered by France international centre-back Mamadou Sakho, the former Liverpool defender said: “Whether he (Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp) thinks he needs to bring a centre-back in because there aren't too many options in that position. Maybe that will be a position he looks at in January.”
Sakho has been one of the better players for Liverpool so far this season, but he is on the sidelines at the moment with a knee ligament problem.
The 25-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain central defender picked up the injury before the two-week international break, and it remains to be seen when he is back to full fitness.
Kolo Toure and Dejan Lovren are available, but it remains to be seen how much faith Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp puts in the duo.
Liverpool are 10th in the Premier League table at the moment with 17 points from 12 matches.
The Merseyside outfit will take on Manchester City away from home at the Etihad Stadium in the league on Saturday evening.
