Payet joined West Ham from Marseille during the summer transfer window, and he has been an instant hit at Upton Park.
The attacking midfielder has been brought straight into the Hammers’ starting line-up, and he has caught Gale’s eye.
"I've been so impressed with him. He is one of these players that West Ham have not had for a while that they can relate to," the pundit enthused.
"When he first came you could see he wasn't quite fit but he still scored goals and got assists. As he got fitter he got more and more involved.”
Unfortunately for West Ham, Payet is set for an extended spell on the sidelines, after picking up an injury in their last match.
Payet was hacked down by James McCarthy while playing against Everton, and he will be watching from the sidelines for the rest of 2015, at the very least.
That is a huge blow for West Ham, and Gale has warned that the side cannot change their style too much without Payet in the team.
He added: "By playing [Andy] Carroll the style slightly changes, sometimes it's through no fault of his own, but they have to get into the last third before they get the crosses in to play to his strengths."
West Ham’s first chance to show that they can function without Payet will come this weekend, when they meet in-form Tottenham Hotspur.
