Harry Redknapp says that he wanted to sign John Stones from Queens Park Rangers before he left Barnsley for Everton.

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed in The London Evening Standard that he wanted to sign John Stones for Queens Park Rangers.

Stones joined Premier League outfit Everton from Barnsley in January 2013.

Redknapp has revealed that he could have recruited the 21-year-old defender when he was the manager of London side QPR.

“Look at John Stones at Barnsley,” the Englishman wrote in The London Evening Standard. “We tried to sign him at QPR but Everton went in — how did they nick him for £3m in January 2013?

“Where were all the recruitment ‘experts’ who have taken control of signing players away from managers nowadays?”

Stones has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the Premier League.

The youngster has also earned seven caps for England and is set to be part of the Three Lions’ squad for the 2016 European Championship.

The 21-year-old has been playing well this season and appears to be going from strength to strength.

In 10 Premier League appearances so far this campaign, Stones has a pass accuracy of 89%, and has won 17 headers, six dribbles and 19 tackles.

Everton are ninth in the Premier League table at the moment with 17 points from 12 matches, seven points behind fourth-place Manchester United.
