The Magpies have made an inauspicious start to the new campaign, and they currently sit down in 17th place in England’s top-flight.
However, Janmaat believes that they are in a false position – and he has backed his teammates to start firing the side up the standings in the coming weeks.
“We feel like we have turned things around a little bit," the Dutch international defender said to the Mirror. "That was very important for the manager and for us as well.
“We want to try to finish in the top 10 and I think that’s possible with the players that we have. We shouldn’t be down at the bottom, but it’s up to us to carry on making steps forward."
For Newcastle to finish in the top 10 would be a major achievement, considering their start.
Steve McClaren’s side have won just two of their first 12 matches in the league this season, but they have improved of late.
Newcastle seem to be starting to adapt to McClaren’s methods, and there have been signs of encouragement in their recent outings.
Newcastle’s next match comes against Leicester City at the weekend, and if they are able to topple the high-flying Foxes, they could start to put clear daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.
