Did Newcastle well and truly drop the ball here, or would they have just ruined him?
Over the years, Newcastle United fans have become quite accustomed to disappointment both on and off the pitch - especially on it.
However, one thing they've managed to do pretty consistently – other than lose the Tyne-Wear derby – is miss out on quite a few players.
There was Charlie Austin in the summer, Wayne Rooney back in 2004, and Bastian Schweinsteiger – on that occasion they decided to sign Ignacio Gonzalez instead... exactly.
And there is another name to add to that list, and we think Newcastle fans might just be more pained by this one than the others... Dele Alli.
It was widely reported in January that the Magpies were interested in the then MK Dons midfielder, who had lit League One up over the previous two seasons, with the Daily Mail reporting a mere £4million was bid by Newcastle.
However, MK Dons held out for £5million, Newcastle said no and Spurs snapped their hands off for him. Ten excellent Premier League performances, four England caps and one brilliant goal later, and Toon fans have got their head in their hands.
And after his excellent performance against France on Tuesday, Toon fans took to Twitter to give their thoughts on if Alli had signed for Newcastle:
I bet Dele Alli regrets not coming to Newcastle to play in the reserves whilst Ryan Taylor and Gouffran boss the midfield. #nufc— JW (@footyramblings) November 17, 2015
If newcastle had got dele alli he would have been on loan on the bench at scunthorpe not bagging a worldie for england— Marc Dixon (@MarcDixonn) November 17, 2015
If we'd got Dele Alli he'd have only been here for about 6 weeks anyway man. #NUFC— Ross (@_Jenky88) November 17, 2015
#NUFC just missing out on Dele Alli gets more painful by the day. He was on the verge, man.— Marc Jobling (@MarcJobling) November 17, 2015
And to think NUFC thought they had agreed a deal to sign Dele Alli last season... Disappointing that they failed to see it home.— Craig Hope (@CraigHope_DM) November 17, 2015
