Liverpool have been linked with a move for Granit Xhaka.

According to a report in the German publication Bild, Liverpool and Arsenal are leading the chase to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Granit Xhaka.

The 23-year-old has been a key figure for the Bundesliga outfit in recent seasons, helping the club to qualify for the Champions League last season with a number of stunning performances.

His influence on the team seemingly hasn’t gone unnoticed, what with links to the Premier League and a burgeoning reputation among the Swiss people.

Xhaka is very much a dominant midfield figure, capable of dropping deep and instigating attacks from within his own half, and also pushing up and offering a genuine goal threat.

He is very much an action-packed star in the middle, and with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp seeking new players with an identity to mould his style, he should look no further than Xhaka.

Granit Xhaka Borussia Monchengladbach 3 2.2 3.2 1.5 87.5 85.7% 11

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, his performances already this year have been to a very high standard as he outshines midfielder Emre Can in a number of key areas.

The former Basel man averages more tackles, interceptions and effective clearances per league match than Can, while his ball retention and goal threat is also significantly better.

Klopp’s arrival at Anfield has injected some much-needed energy around the place, yet their recent defeat to Crystal Palace somewhat burst the bubble and offered up a sense of realism.

Klopp, as talented as he is, isn’t a miracle-worker and without some new faces on Merseyside, it would be very difficult to envisage the Reds making a proper challenge for the top four.

New players are needed, ones who fit the popular German coach’s style and are intelligent enough off the ball to be aggressive enough not to leave gaps open and abandon the team’s shape.

Xhaka is an excellent, hardworking player who has all of the attributes needed to thrive in a Klopp team.
