Paul Dummett claims Rob Elliot's form has been massive for Newcastle United

Rob Elliot has been handed an unexpected run of games in Newcastle United's first-team.

Paul Dummett has told the Shields Gazette that Rob Elliot’s brilliant run of form has been massive for Newcastle United.

Elliot has been brought into Newcastle’s team after both their first-choice goalkeepers, Tim Krul and Karl Darlow, were ruled out with injury.

Elliot may have felt that he was unlikely to play this term, but he has been excellent ever since coming into the starting line-up.

And Dummett said to the Shields Gazette: “That’s the kind of character Rob is – he wants to play.

“At the start of the season, he probably thought he was never going to play this season at all.

“So for him to come from that to where he is now is massive for us. To have him as a back-up keeper to Tim, who is obviously injured, gives us a lot of confidence as well.”

Elliot has helped Newcastle climb out of the relegation zone, and he was in wonderful form against Bournemouth in their latest contest.

The former Charlton Athletic man pulled off a string of superb stops to thwart the Cherries, and helped Newcastle pick up a 1-0 win.

That three-point haul lifted the Magpies up to 17th in the Premier League table, and Elliot will hope to continue his fine form after the international break.

With Krul out injured for the season, there is a place up for grabs between the sticks for Newcastle, and Elliot has grasped his opportunity with both hands so far.
