Cisse has come under-fire at the Magpies, with his lack of work-rate regularly being criticised by supporters.
And Simpson agrees that Cisse has looked off the pace in some matches, although he was pleased with the 30-year-old’s performance against Bournemouth in Newcastle’s most recent outing.
“It’s funny because there’s been games where you could question his level of performance – I totally agree with that – but he’s the type of footballer who I think, when he gets his opportunity, works his socks off,” Simpson said.
“At Bournemouth I thought he was excellent when he came on, I really did. When he came on he actually made a difference to us.
“It’s just been the way that games have gone that we’ve chosen not to involve him but Papiss has still got a part to play – there’s no doubt about that in our mind.”
Cisse looks set to play second fiddle to Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez for the rest of the season, if he remains at St. James’ Park.
Mitrovic and Perez have formed an impressive partnership up front for the Magpies, and Cisse will struggle to break it up.
At the moment, Cisse has scored just one goal in eight appearances this season, and Newcastle will be hoping that return improves as the campaign progresses.
Newcastle’s next match comes against Leicester City at the weekend, and Cisse will be hoping to make an impression if given an opportunity in the contest.
