The Rotherham United loanee was strongly linked with Leeds United earlier this season.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post Leeds had been tracking the 19-year-old regarding a potential loan move while the Daily Star claimed the Whites were still attempting to secure a deal on transfer deadline day.
Ultimately that did not happen, and now Barker is on loan not at Leeds but at fellow Championship side Rotherham United under former Whites’ boss Neil Redfearn.
And here is where it gets interesting, with the two sides going head-to-head on Saturday as Barker attempts to earn his side a much-needed victory as they bid to climb away from the bottom of the table.
Leeds needed width this season and they subsequently signed Will Buckley, Stuart Dallas and Jordan Botaka, but could the one that got away come back to haunt them on Saturday?
Only time will tell, but Barker started his Rotherham career in impressive fashion, scoring on his debut even if his strike was a mere consolation in a defeat to Ipswich Town.
Barker will be hoping to score again this weekend, and if he manages it Leeds fans will see first-hand what all the fuss was about during the summer.
