Virgil van Dijk believes the Dutchman can replace Morgan Schneiderlin after his move to Manchester United.
Schneiderlin was a star for several seasons for the Saints as they rose through the divisions, especially starring for them in the Premier League.
He was long linked with a move away from Saint Mary’s though, and that became a reality this summer, as he left for Manchester United.
Manager Ronald Koeman was swift in trying to replace the Frenchman, bringing in Dutchman Clasie from Feyenoord for £8m.
He has endured a frustrating start to life in England after an injury ruled him out, although he has impressed in recent weeks, and Van Dijk has backed his compatriot to be better than the departed Schneiderlin.
“I know him from way back and it is good to have him in the team. Maybe he can even be better than Morgan Schneiderlin,” the Mirror reports him saying.
“It is difficult to tell but I think he can be a very good player for the Saints. Alongside Victor Wanyama I think we have a great midfield.”
Given how big a player Schneiderlin was for Southampton, Clasie would have to put in seriously impressive performances to be better for the Saints than him.
Now he is back fit however, he has impressed, with him currently undefeated in four games for the side.
Key to success in Koeman’s side will be forming an effective partnership with Victor Wanyama in central midfield, with him key to side.
If that can happen soon, there is no doubting he can be a big player for Southampton in future.
