The former Arsenal and Chelsea star is available on a free.
Aston Villa have been dealt a blow during the international break with the news that star summer signing Jordan Amavi is out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury picked up on duty with the France under-21s.
The defender, signed from Nice this summer, has been one of their better performing summer arrivals and his absence will be keenly felt in the Aston Villa first-team.
The club are not blessed in the position. Kieran Richardson has struggled this term whilst Alan Hutton is naturally right-footed. Joleon Lescott used to play there at times for Everton but has not done so in a long while whilst Jose Crespo has struggled to make an impact. They could recall Joe Bennett from Bournemouth, but he would not be an inspiring replacement.
What Villa should do, is bring in Ashley Cole.
The former Chelsea and Arsenal man oozes prestige. He has played 107 times for England and won the Premier League four times as well picking up winners medals for the FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Champions League.
He struggled at Roma last term and in August, as reported by The Telegraph, he was released from his contract with the club.
Meaning he is a free agent.
Villa should sign him now, give him some time to build up his fitness, and then throw him in to a relegation battle he would hopefully thrive on.
Surely Cole would fancy one more big challenge before hanging up his boots or heading for megabucks in the Middle East or USA?
Villa should ask him and find out.
