The Wearside club need some major reinforcements ahead of the January window if they are to improve their chances of staying in the Premier League, as they currently sit second bottom in the table with just one win in 12 games.
Bitton is said to be one of the players manager Sam Allardyce has targeted to improve his struggling team, and the report claims that he has sent scouts to keep tabs on the Israeli midfielder in a number of European and domestic games in recent weeks.
Despite the interest, the chances of bringing Bitton to the Stadium of Light will be low, as the 24-year-old recently signed a new contract with the Bhoys.
He is currently contracted to 2020, and although that does not rule out a move, Celtic can place a high asking price on Bitton’s head knowing that they are under no threat of losing him if they do not want to.
The interest in Bitton comes as no surprise, given his impressive form this season with the Bhoys.
He has played 22 games, scoring five goals, and has shown a major improvement in his game from his previous two seasons at Parkhead.
Despite sitting in holding midfield, Bitton has brought a goal threat to his game, and he looks a far more rounded player than he used to, with years to develop still ahead of him.
