Liverpool striker Christian Benteke had been expected to start for Belgium against Spain, before the game was called off late last night.

Christian Benteke was pictured in training for Belgium ahead of what would have been a glamour friendly with Spain on Tuesday night.

Belgium are the current FIFA ranked world number one nation, but face a tough test against the reigning European champions.

Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblade reported Benteke is expected to start the fixture, having sat out the 3-1 victory over Italy on Friday evening.

Instead the game has been called off, with the Belgian FA instructed to do so on Government advice after receiving a terrorist threat, Nieuwsblade later reported.

It would have been an ideal chance for Benteke to state his case for a starting spot for his country, and while he will return to Liverpool rested, the circumstances are far from satisfactory.

Benteke did feature in Liverpool's last game, a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace, and has a record of four goals in nine Premier League appearances since his big summer move from Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld were among those present in training, amid a high security presence, even prior to last night's announcement.
