Aston Villa wanted Chrisophe Galtier as boss, not Remi Garde - report

Le 10 Sport claim that the Premier League side were ready to activate his €10 million (£7m) St Etienne release clause.

Aston Villa reportedly identified St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier as their number one target to replace Tim Sherwood, with Le 10 Sport claiming that the Premier League side were ready to activate his €10 million (£7m) release clause.

The former Spurs boss was relieved of his duties after the Birmingham-based outfit’s dire run of form, with Remi Garde being named as his successor.

However, Le 10 Sport claim that the Villa Park side looked to his compatriot before approaching the former Lyon boss.

Galtier is said to have a €10 million release clause with his current employers, which the English club were willing to match.

However, after careful consideration the Ligue 1 outfit rejected the approach from Villa, prompting the decision to move for Garde.

Galtier has been in the St Etienne hotseat since 2009 and has spearheaded the sleeping giants to a period of overachievement during his tenure at the club.

Garde has a tough task in keeping a transitional Villa in the Premier League, but the Midlands outfit picked up an encouraging point against division leaders Manchester City last time out.
