Tottenham Hotspur star Ryan Mason called up to England squad

His inclusion brings the Spurs contingent for England up to five.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason has been drafted into the England squad for tomorrow’s friendly against France, as confirmed by the club’s official Twitter account.

The 24-year old has only just returned to the Spurs first-team picture, after injuring himself against Sunderland back in September, and has found himself behind Dele Alli and Eric Dier in the pecking order.

Fabian Delph’s withdrawal from the squad facilitated the need for another central midfielder to be brought in and Roy Hodgson’s selection of Mason is a sign of the trust he has quickly established.

His initial call-up was met with derision in some quarters but the Spurs academy product has clearly made an impression on Hodgson - enough of an impression to be considered despite lacking full match sharpness.

The long-term picture may be different however, with Alli, Dier and even Mousa Dembele all capable of keeping Mason out of Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

He will be determined to force a return but the challenge of regaining a place in the starting line-up – as will be the case for Nabil Bentaleb – is a real indication of Tottenham’s strength in depth this season.
