Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly pursuing Borussia Monchengladbach's Granit Xhaka.

According to The Sun, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is set to launch a bid to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Granit Xhaka - but faces competition from Arsenal.

Klopp took charge of the Reds last month, and with the club still severely underachieving, the German will surely be looking for additions to his squad in the January transfer window.

Having enjoyed seven successful years at Borussia Dortmund boss, Klopp will be familiar with some of the top players in the Bundesliga, and fans are certainly hoping that he can lure some talented players over from Germany to Anfield.

Now, The Sun are reporting that Klopp could indeed launch a swoop on a Bundesliga club, with Borussia Monchengladbach's Granit Xhaka believed to be a target.

The Swiss midfielder, 23, rose up through the ranks with Basel before joining Monchengladbach in 2012, and his reputation continues to grow having starred in Germany.

With a great range of passing and a dangerous ability to shoot from range, Xhaka is one of the top young midfielders in Europe - and it seems that Klopp now wants him to join the revolution at Anfield.

The potential spanner in the works is that the report also states that Arsenal want to sign the £21m-rated Xhaka, with Arsene Wenger ready to challenge Klopp for his signature.

The Gunners chose not to sign a midfielder over the summer, but with question marks over the long-term futures of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky, signing a young midfielder could be a top priority for Wenger in January.

With Xhaka attracting plenty of interest, a bidding war may ensue for his services, with Monchengladbach surely aware that they can't keep hold of their star midfielder - who has been compared to Bastian Schweinsteiger - for much longer.
