Report: Aston Villa set to hire assistant who rejected Newcastle this summer in Steve Round

Aston Villa are reportedly on the verge of appointing a no.2, one who rejected the Magpies over the summer.

Aston Villa are set to appoint Steve Round as Remi Garde's assistant manager, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Indeed, Round worked at Everton and Manchester United and is reportedly set to join Villa after being chosen by Garde.

The Telegraph report that Round was also wanted by Tim Sherwood during his time in the Midlands and, most intriguingly, that he rejected the chance to join Newcastle United as Steve McClaren's assistant over the summer.

Newcastle are said to have made a move for the 45-year-old but he turned down the opportunity to move to St James' Park and will now sign a short-term deal with Aston Villa.

Round, of course, was also David Moyes' former assistant, a man some Villa fans wanted to replace Sherwood.

Another interesting link is that Shaka Hislop recently urged former club Newcastle to replace McClaren with Moyes.

As for Round, though, it appears his next challenge in football will be helping Aston Villa stay up. The early signs are his manager has the nous to do so but, with the Midlands outfit sitting bottom of the Premier League table, all the hard work lies ahead.
