Aston Villa are currently five points away from safety.
The Villians have recently appointed Remi Garde to get them out of the hole they are currently in, which has seen them fall to the bottom of the Premier League table.
However, Thompson doesn’t believe that the Frenchman will be able to guide them to safety – unless they have a very productive January.
"I can’t see them getting out of trouble. I don’t care who has come in," Thompson said.
"Unless they make some fantastic signings in January and go on an unbelievable run, I can’t see where they are going to get points.
"You are looking at areas and they have problems everywhere, right from the goalkeeper, who is as nervous as a kitten. They’re all like that."
Villa are already five points away from safety, meaning that Garde has a tough job on his hands to keep them in England’s top-flight.
However, his first match in charge against Manchester City was encouraging, as he helped the Claret and Blues pick up a 0-0 draw.
Villa were much improved in that contest, but they have some tough fixtures on the horizon.
The Midlands club face Everton, Watford, Southampton and Arsenal in their next four matches, meaning they will have to be at their very best to collect the victories that they need.
