The 26-year-old centre-back has struggled with a back injury in recent months and as such has fallen out of favour at Dortmund, making just one Bundesliga start all season.
Following Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as Liverpool boss, Subotic was one of the first names to be linked with a move to Anfield following the defender’s previous allegiance to the popular German coach.
The Serbian ace played under Klopp at both Mainz and Dortmund, helping the latter win two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal German Cup during a highly-successful period.
“Subotic could soon leave Dortmund. The Serbian defender interests Liverpool but could remain in Germany as Hannover prepare to make an offer in January. Talks have begun,” the report states.
While Subotic has experienced plenty of success with Dortmund, his current injury problems have hampered his career somewhat and many doubt whether he remains a top-level defender.
Liverpool have defensive options in the mould of Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho and it could be argued that Subotic wouldn’t offer the Reds much more than what they currently have.
Klopp needs to make a number of signings at Anfield in order to take the club forward, yet there are more pressing matters to resolve such as their lack of width before thinking about the defence.
