Celtic youngster Conor Hazard says Edwin van der Sar is his idol

The young Celtic goalkeeper is aiming to be as good as one of football's best ever stoppers.

Young Celtic goalkeeper Conor Hazard has been speaking to the club’s official website about his footballing idol.

The 17-year-old has a long way to go before he is challenging for a first-team place at Celtic Park, but he clearly learned from the best when you consider his goalkeeping hero.

When asked about his idol in the sport, Hazard told celtifc.net, “Edwin van der Sar. He’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen. He’s a player I looked up to and aspire to be like.

“I didn’t really like anyone else in the Manchester United team, only him.”

Hazard currently plays for Northern Ireland’s under-17s and he is in the squad for the latest international break, and having been named on the bench for Celtic’s UEFA Youth League matches against Helsinki earlier this season, he is clearly highly-rated by the Bhoys’ youth coaches.

In time he could yet impress Celtic manager Ronny Deila or whoever is in charge by the time he is pushing for a senior call-up. But as Hazard will know all too well, young goalkeepers have to be very patient; and ones at clubs like Celtic even more so.
