The Sporting Lisbon player continues to be linked with West Ham United.
The Hammers have been linked with the Algerian international many times before, but up until now the 27-year-old has remained in the Portuguese capital. However, the latest report suggests West Ham manager Slaven Bilic wants to sign Slimani having seen two of his attacking options – Dimitri Payet and Enner Valencia – suffer serious injuries.
Midfielder Payet has been one of West Ham’s most effective attacking outlets this season, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 14 appearances, and with the Frenchman and Valencia out of action, it would be no surprise if Bilic opted to strengthen his scoring options.
So would Slimani be the sensible signing?
It could be argued that January would in fact be the perfect time for West Ham to make their move for the player. After all, with the club currently sixth in the Premier League – just five points behind league leaders Manchester City – West Ham will be an attractive option for a footballer looking to make his mark in England.
Then there is the fact that Slimani continues to prove his goal-scoring worth, netting seven goals in just 10 league games for Sporting so far this season, and eight in all competitions.
The player is on fire and while it would be a risk signing someone midway through the season, at least he is on a good run of form that he could well continue despite his change of surroundings.
The problem comes with the fact that Sporting are currently top of their division – in no small part down to Slimani’s efforts.
Would they sell in January? That is highly unlikely unless they could bring in a worth replacement. But when it comes to West Ham, at least bidding for him at the turn of the year seems a no-brainer.
