England slipped to a 2-0 friendly defeat away in Alicante on Friday night as goals from Mario and Santi Cazorla handed Spain a comfortable victory.
Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson handed starts to the likes of Ryan Bertrand, Adam Lallana, Fabian Delph and Ross Barkley as he gave a number of players a chance to impress, but the defeat shows just how much work Hodgson still has to do before next summer's European Championships.
An acrobatic strike from defender Mario put Vicente Del Bosque's men in front during the second half, before Arsenal star Santi Cazorla added a late second to seal the win.
Hodgson made five substitutions during the game in a bid to get England on the front foot, and one of those changes was to bring Eric Dier on.
The Tottenham midfielder, who also qualifies to play for Portugal, has enjoyed a great start to the season for Spurs, and those performances earned him his England debut on Friday, as he came on as a 63rd substitute in place of Lallana.
It's been a rise to prominence for Dier, who was in and out of the Tottenham side last season before becoming a mainstay in midfield this term, and Tottenham fans were understandably delighted to see him - and his midfield partner Dele Alli - turn out for England.
However, rival fans aren't quite so convinced by Dier, with some suggesting that he shouldn't be in the England squad, though others saw him as the heir to Owen Hargreaves in the England midfield.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Dier's England debut, with a mixed reaction amongst rival supporters, despite the encouragement from Spurs...
Criticism of Dier is laughable. England fans would still rather pick based on names & big club reputation as opposed to the best players.— Matthew. (@likeavillasboas) November 13, 2015
Dier looked totally in his element on his England debut!!! Put Kane in on goal lovely and Kane shud of scored!— dAbSpUr (@dabspur1882) November 13, 2015
Dier and Alli will be at the heart of England's midfield for many more years. Talent.— TheHotspurInsider (@HotspurInsider) November 13, 2015
Anyone questioning Eric Dier's place in the England squad clearly hasn't watched him play at all this season.— Harry Mills (@HMills_6) November 13, 2015
Chuffed for Dier !! Future England captain in the making.and also for Alli, they've been brilliant for us all season.— martin reynolds (@martinreynolds9) November 13, 2015
An Alli + Dier midfield duo is everything England hoped Lampard & Gerrard would be..— Andrew Labib (@Andrew_Labib) November 13, 2015
#England have lacked a true DM since Hargreaves. Dier learning that role only beneficial for country. also few options in youth age groups.— aidan (@englandyouth) November 13, 2015
Eric dier is going to be a very special footballer for England in a few years time! Sorry Spurs but you won't hold onto him! #baller— ryan pooley (@ryan_pooley) November 13, 2015
As many have said already, and from a neutral viewpoint, if Dier played for Leicester he would be nowhere near the England team. Fact.— jay allen (@jayjay_allen) November 13, 2015
