The player reportedly on the verge of moving to Tottenham Hotspur could have followed a very different path.
According to a recent report from Spanish newspaper AS, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from Ultimate Strikers Academy, but in a recent interview the player’s father hinted that he did not previously want his son to take up the game at all.
Speaking to completesportsnigeria.com earlier this week, Patrick Osimhen explained his thoughts prior to his son’s outstanding performances at the under-17 World Cup, during which he scored 10 goals in just seven matches.
That form has reportedly prompted Tottenham to make their move, and given their penchant for signing and developing outstanding youngsters that would be no surprise, and yet Osimhen would have followed a very different path were it up to his father.
“I’ve always wanted my son to go to school to become either a medical doctor or a lawyer but he was always coming home dirty from the field playing football,” Osimhen senior told Complete Sports Nigeria.
“And each time I watch him play I’m happy and thankful to God. His strength lies in knowing exactly where he is at, but never gets overwhelmed, that I know of him.”
The reports linking Tottenham with a move for Osimhen are yet to be substantiated by the club, but given Spurs’ scouting network and the player’s undoubted talent, a move to White Hart Lane would make sense.
Still extremely young, he would be a long way off the Tottenham first-team, but if the move does ultimately go through, securing his services ahead of plenty of other likely suitors could prove to be a master-stroke in the long run.
