The former Queens Park Rangers boss has heaped praise on the Leyton Orient forward.
Ian Holloway says he tried to sign the 'very, very talented' Jay Simpson when he was QPR and Blackpool boss, according to his regular predictions column for Sky Sports.
Indeed, the former manager and current pundit has heaped praise on the 26-year-old former Arsenal man, who currently plies his trade for Leyton Orient.
And Holloway's admiration almost turned into a transfer for Simpson, with QPR and Blackpool both expressing interest when he was in charge.
While predicting a 3-0 win for Leyton Orient at Hartlepool, Holloway told Sky Sports: "Jay Simpson, who has scored 11 goals this season, is a player I tried to sign at Blackpool and QPR; he's a very, very talented boy. That is the sort of quality Orient have got."
Intriguingly, QPR's old boss Holloway could still become their next boss. The odds are unlikely but Sky Bet still have the Sky Sports pundit priced at 25/1 to rejoin the Loftus Road outfit.
Nigel Pearson is the 4/6 favourite, with Paul Lambert behind him on 3/1. Beyond that is Neil Warnock, priced at 4/1, who is the R's' current caretaker manager.
Next up for QPR after the international break is a trip to Middlesbrough, before they host Leeds United. It won't be too easy, then, for Warnock - or his potential successor - to get the west London side back on track.
