HITC Sport understands that the teenager is set to link up with the Addicks on an initial trail basis.
The 19-year-old is currently with Enfield Town, but he has already spent time with Newcastle United, Queen Park Rangers, Fulham and Aldershot Town.
In 2013 he trained with Newcastle and was close to signing for the North East outfit before injury scuppered a potential deal.
But now, finally, Hayden-Smith is closing in on a big move, and Championship side Charlton are in pole position to land him.
A host of clubs had been closing in on a deal for Hayden-Smith, but Charlton have moved to offer him a trial period and he will link up with the club next week.
During that time, he will be hoping to do enough to convince the Addicks, who remain without a permanent manager at present, that he is deserving of a contract and a step up the League pyramid.
