Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has suggested he may not push for West Brom goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard after all.
Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has explained how goalkeeper Marco Silvestri's form has persuaded him to make a U-turn on his transfer plans.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Evans described Silvestri's form as 'stunning', and says he feels he has got his confidence back.
Last month Evans told LUTV that he intended to sign a goalkeeper to increase competition at the club. Now he is not so certain.
He said of Silvestri: "He's been stunning. I think when you come in as a new head coach three of four weeks ago and you look at all the clips, as is your job to do, your thinking, do we need a goalkeeper here, I can understand what many people are saying.
"But the big fella' went out against Cardiff and there was a lot of pressure on him, and he delivered a clean sheet, which was largely due to one or two decent saves from him... in the second half against Huddersfield he had three outstanding saves, but it was his home ground game which impressed me, his commanding of the situation in the box in set plays
"Playing like that I wouldn't wish to have another goalkeeper, so priorities in football always change from one week to the next. He lost his confidence, and we've been working hard to raise that with the goalkeeping coach, and Marco more than anyone deserves enormous credit."
Evans clearly felt that Silvestri needed to drop down to the bench and another goalkeeper needed to come in, but the Italian has turned that view around.
There is still a case that Leeds need to sign an experienced back-up with Charlie Horton unproven and Ross Turnbull injured, but as the head coach says, it is not as much of a priority.
An alternate explanation
Leeds had been linked with an attempt to sign Anders Lindegaard from West Brom, but Teamtalk.com reported the Baggies are reluctant to loan him out.
So snubbed in an effort to sign the Dane, Evans may be attempting to raise Silvestri's confidence even further by praising him publicly, realising he does not have a viable alternative at present.
