Former striker Tony Cottee excited to see Alex Song back in West Ham action

The Barcelona loanee has been out of action all season so far.

West Ham have started the new season in great form. They have picked up impressive wins against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal and are looking to battle for a place in Europe for next season.

But they have had their fair share of injury troubles to contend with. Andy Carroll, Winston Reid, Enner Valencia, Diafra Sakho - they have all picked up problems along the way.

Now their star signing Dimitri Payet is out for three months with ankle ligament damage.

But the good news is that one summer arrival is set to return to fitness imminently.

Alex Song, who spent last season on loan at West Ham from Barcelona is set to do the same this season. however he has not played yet because of a persistent injury problem.

Now the Cameroonian is nearing a return to action and former West Ham striker turned Sky Sports pundit believes that could be massive for the club.

Writing in his London24 column this week Tony Cottee stated:

"It will be good to have Alex Song back in the midfield soon.

"We could do with his experience and class, as long as we see the Alex that played before last Christmas and not the one that disappointed afterwards."

Song was a revelation for West Ham at the start of last season but did tail off toward the end of the campaign.

If he can come in and perform like he did 12-14 months ago then West Ham will certainly be reaping the benefits of gambling on the injury plagued star.
