HITC Sport understands that the former Aston Villa boss will be returning to management in the Championship at Ewood Park.

Paul Lambert has agreed to become the new manager of Championship side Blackburn Rovers, HITC Sport understands.

Former boss Gary Bowyer was sacked by the Lancashire side on Tuesday, but HITC Sport has learnt that owners Venkys had made the decision before the weekend’s 1-1 home draw with Brentford.

Indeed Rovers have lost just one game in their last five, but that form was of little consequence as it was clear that the club’s Indian-based hierarchy had opted for a different way forward from the one which Bowyer presented.

Now, having had a shortlist of three coaches, HITC Sport believes that they have opted for Lambert, who has verbally agreed to the terms put to him.

Lambert is now set for a return to football management at Ewood Park some nine months since his last role.

The 49-year-old has been out of work since leaving Aston Villa in February, as he struggled to lift them away from relegation danger.
