Wijnaldum joined Newcastle from PSV Eindhoven in the summer transfer window, and he has made an instant impact at St. James’ Park.
The attacking midfielder currently leads the club’s scoring charts, and Nicholas has praised his contribution in an attacking sense.
However, the former Scotland international claims that Wijnaldum’s class can only carry Newcastle so far, unless they start to sort out their defensive issues.
“Wijnaldum has been a real good find for them, and he has improved their attacking format,” he said. “But their problem is that if you attack too much, what is going to be left behind?”
Wijnaldum has netted seven times for Newcastle so far, but his fine run of goalscoring form has not been able to inspire Steve McClaren’s side to make a productive start to their 2015/16 campaign.
One of the major reasons for this has been Newcastle’s porous defence, as they have conceded 22 times to date, and unless they are able to tighten up their backline, they are unlikely to start climbing the table and away from trouble.
