Report: Newcastle still keen on recruiting Manchester United outcast Victor Valdes

Rob Elliot may have put in a man of the match performance for Newcastle against Bournemouth, but it appears the Toon are still keen on Victor Valdes.

Newcastle United have not given up hope of signing forgotten Manchester United goalkeeper and former Barcelona Champions League winner Victor Valdes.

That is according to a report from Italian news source Sport Media Set, which claims that the Magpies remain keen on recruiting the Spaniard for the remainder of the season.

This comes despite the impressive form of Tim Krul’s stand-in Rob Elliot, with the 29-year-old pulling off a string of important saves during Newcastle’s potentially crucial 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.

Despite the Greenwich-born goalkeeper’s impressive form, another goalkeeper still looks to be a requirement for the club, though many had believed that a deal for Valdes was seemingly dead in the water.

But with the ex-Barca man frozen out of the Manchester United first-team picture under Louis Van Gaal, a move looks likely.

David De Gea is the undisputed no.1 at Old Trafford, with Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero operating as back up.

Valdes will, nevertheless, have to wait until January to make his move, meaning Elliot has plenty of time to impress Steve McClaren and the coaches at Newcastle.

Continue his fine form between the sticks for the Toon, and any interest in Valdes could all but disappear.
