Tottenham signed Toby Alderweireld over the summer transfer window.
Alderweireld has become a key figure in Tottenham’s defence this season following his summer move from Atletico Madrid, and Marc Wilmots told RTBF that the centre-back is the the most valuable player to his Belgium team right now.
When asked who his most important player is, Wilmots said: “For now, it's Toby Alderweireld He has improved a lot, he is versatile, and he became one of my most regular selections.”
They commit few mistakes, and possess the composure, athleticism and natural footballing ability to be top class players.
Having played together at Ajax it is no surprise that the duo have taken so little time to strike up a great partnership, and Wilmots is also benefitting as head coach of Belgium.
However, with the Red Devils, Alderweireld and Vertonghen do not play as part of a central defensive partnership, with them taking up the right-back and left-back positions respectively.
Wilmots usually names Nicolas Lombaerts and Jason Denayer in central defence, but if the Spurs duo continue to play so well this term, the head coach may have no option but to test them out in the run up to Euro 2016.
