Wijnaldum moved to Newcastle from PSV over the summer.
Georginio Wijnaldum signed a deal with Newcastle over the summer despite rumours suggesting he would be heading to a Champions League club, and the Dutch midfielder has spoken to SoccerNews to confirm that he does not regret the transfer to St James’ Park.
The talented midfielder said: “I am mostly concerned with showing myself on a large stage, and showing how well I can play football. I made the decision based on my feeling. Because the level in the league is much higher, it feels like every week I am playing in the Champions League. I also learn there and that helps my growth.”
Wijnaldum shocked a lot of people when he decided to sign with Newcastle over the summer, despite the rumoured interest of a number of Champions League sides.
He could even have stayed with PSV, as they had just won the Eredivisie, qualifying for Europe’s premier competition, and where Wijnaldum was captain.
The 24-year-old star was named Player of the Year in the Netherlands for last season, and the Magpies pulled off a massive coup bringing him in considering they were fighting a relegation battle last season.
Wijnaldum’s signing was meant to get them out of these relegation fears, but although he has impressed, Newcastle are still struggling at the bottom of the table.
On a personal level, Wijnaldum has played well, scoring six times in 12 games, and assisting a further two strikes. He needs to add some more consistency to his game, but the signs are all there that Wijnaldum will be a successful player with Newcastle.
