Shinji Kagawa shows Manchester United what they are missing with outstanding performance for Dortmund

The former Manchester United player looks in great form for Borussia Dortmund.

When Manchester United sold Shinji Kagawa back to Borussia Dortmund there were many fans who felt the Japanese play-maker never had the chance to show just how good he could be at Old Trafford.

Others said he flattered to deceive in his limited appearances but they were in the minority, and since he has returned to the Bundesliga Kagawa has picked up where he left off back in 2012.

The second half of last season saw Kagawa rediscover his form, ending Jurgen Klopp’s final year in charge with six goals and 10 assists, but this season he is shining even brighter.

In just 19 matches for Dortmund, the 26-year-old has seven goals and eight assists and on Sunday he put in a man-of-the-match performance in a 3-2 victory against Schalke.

Kagawa was sublime at the weekend, bossing the first half in particular as he went in at the break with one goal, one key pass, a 92 per cent passing accuracy and a 100 per cent tackle accuracy.

While he tailed off slightly in the second period there was no doubting Kagawa’s influence on the result and any United fan watching will have seen just what Sir Alex Ferguson initially forked out all that money for prior to his retirement.

Robin van Persie’s arrival shortly after and Wayne Rooney’s subsequent shifting to a number 10 position meant Kagawa never got the chance to shine at United, but Dortmund has proved to be his home and given his age he could be about to get even better.
