Sam Allardyce reportedly wants to strengthen at the back this winter.
The name mentioned is Olympiacos full-back Arthur Masuaku, who has also been watched by Serie A champions Juventus, and one of the favourites for the title this season in Roma.
The 22-year-old has made 12 appearances in all competitions so far this season, including three in the Champions League and play further forward on the left-wing.
Patrick van Aanholt is currently the only natural left-back option available to Allardyce and given the Dutchman has made several errors, combined with a record this season that only reads one clean sheet for the Black Cats, it is an area where Allardyce will probably want to strengthen.
His side went down to another defeat at the weekend as a Dusan Tadic penalty gave Southampton all three points at the Stadium of Light and it left them four points adrift of safety second from bottom of the table.
The Sunderland Echo also reports that players are expected to be moved on, despite a busy summer in the transfer market.
It looks as if there is going to be yet more upheaval when it comes to the playing staff as Allardyce looks to become the third manager in as many seasons to pull of a rescue act with Sunderland's season and secure their status in the top flight after yet another poor start to a season, and change in manager.
