Jordan Veretout's age means he could be a future Aston Villa great

The Aston Villa midfielder could be set to blossom under his new manager.

When Aston Villa signed Jordan Veretout for a reported £8million from Nantes in the summer, those with knowledge of Ligue 1 football hailed it as a master-stroke by then-manager Tim Sherwood.

Such was the influx of players at Villa Park during the last transfer window that Veretout’s arrival could have easily been forgotten, and when the young Frenchman struggled to make an impact on the pitch, things did not look good.

In truth everyone at Villa was struggling as they took just four points from their first 11 matches and Sherwood was ultimately replaced by Remi Garde; so it is telling that the former Lyon boss recalled Veretout for his very first game in charge, despite the midfielder not featuring for the previous three league matches.

As it turned out, Garde knew exactly what he was doing and Veretout was arguably Villa’s standout player in their impressive 0-0 draw against Manchester City at the weekend.

Still only 22, Veretout has time on his side, and if he continues to deliver as he did on Sunday he could go on to become a Villa superstar.

That will take time, but the most exciting thing about Veretout – aside from his innate talent – is his age.

After all, he is still extremely young but he already has 142 appearances for Nantes under his belt and he looks like being a key player under Garde.

There is a very long way to go, but on recent evidence this Villa summer signing could ultimately go on to be the best of the lot.
