Has Sherwood's exit ended Villa's chances of signing Tottenham's Andros Townsend?

The Tottenham Hotspur winger was linked with a big-money move to Aston Villa in the summer.

According to a report from the Sunday People, Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend is ready to demand a transfer in January with the likes of Leicester City, Swansea City and Aston Villa all said to be interested.

However, while the 24-year-old is likely to have plenty of options if he does leave White Hart Lane, could his path to Villa have been blocked the moment his former boss Tim Sherwood was replaced by Remi Garde?

Sherwood knew Townsend well from his time at White Hart Lane, and back in July the Mirror claimed the then-Villa boss was not put off by the player’s reported £15million price-tag.

Sherwood’s good relationship with the England international was touted as one of the main reasons Townsend could move on, but while Villa shipped in a whole host of players the Tottenham winger was not one of them.

Since then Townsend has made just three substitute appearances in the league and has only played six times in all competitions, but with his future unclear will Garde really feel the same as his predecessor?

Only time will tell, but there is little doubt that if Sherwood had still been at Villa he would have tried to tempt Tottenham into business the second time round.

As it is, Townsend’s future is as unclear as ever, with the player yet to live up to his potential - or justify that alleged £15million price-tag if truth be told - and with the Sunday People claiming Tottenham will now accept £8million, one wonders if Spurs wished they had sold him to Sherwood while they had the chance.
