Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko is to begin talks over a new deal on Tyneside and is said to want a hefty £100,000-a-week, the Mirror reports.
The France international midfielder has impressed since joining the club from Toulouse in January 2013, making 105 appearances in all competitions and scoring 11 goals.
However, the Magpies are keen to hold on to him and plans are afoot to extend his current contract despite there being another three seasons left to run on it.
While this all sounds customary, there is one potential snag. As per the report, Sissoko wants a whopping £100,000-a-week which would surely make him the club’s standout highest earner.
Is Sissoko worth it?
It’s a question which most Newcastle supporters will probably be asking themselves upon hearing the report and the answer is likely to be a resounding no.
Sissoko has evident qualities as a midfielder, yet his form since the beginning of the New Year doesn’t really warrant such him earning such a substantial amount of money.
The midfielder has featured in 11 Premier League matches so far this season, averaging just 1.3 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per match – lowly figures for a player renowned for his defensive capabilities.
In fact, Sissoko is much more effective going forward and has contributed with four assists under new boss Steve McClaren – a decent tally but one which still doesn’t warrant a six-figure wage packet per week.
