John Hartson praises Tottenham duo Rose and Kane but slams Arsenal defender Mertesacker

The former Arsenal front-man was not impressed with a current Gunners centre-back during their match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Pundit and former Arsenal striker John Hartson has been speaking to the BBC about Tottenham Hotspur’s goal against the Gunners this weekend.

Harry Kane took time to get going this season but the England international scored his fifth goal in just three appearances when he latched on to a Danny Rose cross after poor defensive work from Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker.

And the German international’s contribution to the goal was something Hartson highlighted when speaking to BBC Radio 5 live during the clash.

“What a ball in from Danny Rose,” the former Welsh international said. “Where Per Mertesacker is I don’t know – he had to get across. Harry Kane is left one-on-one, it’s a beautiful finish.”

Mertesacker has come in for criticism among some Arsenal fans this season for his lack of pace and many of those same Gunners supporters feel the time has come for Gabriel Paulista to replace the older defender week in, week out.

That was not the case this weekend, the Brazilian Gabriel on the bench and Mertesacker starting alongside Laurent Koscielny in the heart of Arsenal’s back-line, and Tottenham striker Kane for one was grateful for that.

The match ended 1-1 after defender Kieran Gibbs scored to ensure the Gunners did not suffer defeat at the hands of their fierce local rivals.
