Alan Shearer praises Southampton's Virgil van Dijk

St Marys Southampton

Southampton signed Virgil van Dijk from Celtic during the summer transfer window.

Alan Shearer has told BBC's Match of the Day that the signing of Virgil Van Dijk has made a big difference at Southampton.

Van Dijk was brought to St. Mary’s from Celtic during the summer transfer window, and he has made an immediate impact on the south coast.

The powerful centre-back has come straight into starting contention, and Shearer has been very impressed by the performances that he has put in.

“They are on a great run,” Shearer said, after Southampton beat Sunderland 1-0 in their most recent outing. “They are unbeaten away from home and Virgil Van Dijk has made a difference. In the 10 games that he has played they have only lost once, and they are having a very good season again.

“They were miles the better team [against Sunderland]. They sell a lot of players, but they keep on improving. It is remarkable stuff.”

Southampton have slipped under-the-radar somewhat this season, but they seem to have the capabilities to challenge for a European space again.

Ronald Koeman’s side have been defensively secure, and continued to show their attacking class over the early part of the campaign.

Van Dijk’s partnership with Jose Fonte at the heart of their defence has been a major reason behind their success, with the pair both in fine form this season.

Celtic have felt the absence of the Dutch international keenly, with the Bhoys looking defensively vulnerable in a number of matches, especially in Europe, since he left Parkhead.
