The Belgian defender says Tottenham need to be at their best to beat the Gunners
Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has admitted that his side must be at their best to win the North London derby this weekend, telling Tottenham Journal that Arsenal have three real threats in their attack.
The Belgian is set to make his first appearance in the bitter grudge match as a Spurs player as Mauricio Pochettino’s men travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The former Southampton loanee has been a standout player for the North London club this season, forming a solid central defensive pairing with compatriot Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Lilywhites’ rearguard.
Alderweireld has discussed previous derbies that he has played in, while naming three Arsenal attackers that have the potential to hurt Tottenham this weekend.
“I’ve played a lot of derbies – Ajax against Feyenoord was a big one, Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid is a big one, so I know what I can expect,” he told Tottenham Journal.
“But it’s something special, especially for the fans, and we can make a statement to say ‘we are here’. We’re going to do our best and try everything to get some points there.
“In the Premier League every game is a test. Manchester City at home was a test, every game you have to prove yourself against top strikers.
“I think Giroud is in top form, Sanchez is a very good player and there’s Ozil too so they have a lot of class up front and we have to be at our best to beat them.
“We are confident we can do something there. We know they have a very good squad but we are confident in ourselves, in our game, so hopefully we can get some points there.”
Tottenham have not been beaten in the Premier League since the opening day of the new campaign, but suffered Capital One Cup elimination at the hands of their closest rivals at White Hart Lane.
Spurs are coming off the back of victories against Aston Villa and Anderlecht, while the Gunners were humbled by Bayern Munich in midweek in the Champions League.
