The Newcastle United goalkeeper impressed fans but the 26-year-old midfielder didn't...
Saturday afternoon produced a strange football match between Bournemouth and Newcastle.
It's not unheard of, of course, that an away side can sneak a 1-0 win despite the hosts dominating possession.
When Newcastle left Bournemouth with all three points, though, it was one of the most exaggerated examples. The home side dominated proceedings but just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.
A big reason behind Newcastle's victory was the masterful performance of goalkeeper Rob Elliot. And supporters appreciated his efforts on social media after the game:
Rob Elliot was outstanding today. Man of the match any day. But the overall performance by the team was abysmal by anyone's standards #NUFC— Olivia (@0livia1020) November 7, 2015
Don't think we deserve it somehow but nevertheless its three points in the bag....Rob Elliot saved us tremendously. #NUFC— Davey Davey (@DaveyDavey360) November 7, 2015
I also have to admit I'm not exactly Rob Elliot's biggest fan but he was fantastic today. #NUFC— Adam Jack (@AJ19XXEST) November 7, 2015
Take a bow Rob Elliot. What a performance. Played much better this season and got nowt. Funny old game but will take the 3 points #NUFC— Ryan Davison Crisp (@dpgcrimethink) November 7, 2015
However, one man who didn't receive anywhere near as much praise was midfielder Vurnon Anita.
Indeed, the Magpies were thought to be 'woeful' at Bournemouth and their central midfield paring (Anita and Cheick Tiote) were criticised in particular.
And the 26-year-old was seen by many as Newcastle's worst player. McClaren's men may not be able to get away with such a poor display against stronger opposition and here's what fans made of Anita's performance on Twitter...
Tiote&Anita aren't good enough can't protect the back4 can't retain or regain possession badly need a decent CM #nufc— Sean Casey (@caseysean51) November 7, 2015
Really need a quality midfielder in the january window. Anita & Tiote not good enough! Striker and a central defender also needed #nufc— Thor Inge Jonsdal (@JonsdalInge) November 7, 2015
Massive win but disgraceful performance. Anita and Dummett are a joke. Well done Elliott though #nufc— Russell Nelson (@geordieruss1981) November 7, 2015
